Writing, Creativity, & Movement
I’ve always felt that movement sparks my creativity. In fact, it’s one of the reasons why I wanted to get my MFA in writing. I’m not the only one who thinks this, though. Researchers here and here (plus more, I’m sure) have found that movement indeed promotes creativity!
My goal is to combine my two worlds - movement and writing. Why? Because many people have a story to tell, and movement can help them write their story!
Earning this MFA does allow me to teach at the college level, which is incredible! But I’m more interested in seeing what kind of art can transpire for people when movement is intentionally used to promote creativity.
How am I going to do this? That is the question that I have been pondering for a while. I plan on experimenting with a few different ideas to figure out which one is the most beneficial for interested people.
The first idea I’m going to try out is Saturday Open Gym! Saturday Open Gym is a two-hour open gym period where people come to the gym, move, and write. I will provide the movement plan, writing prompts, and provide feedback on both! I hope that this addition will also naturally create a community for this type of inner and outer work.
If this goes well, my plan is to incorporate this at different locations in Portland and elsewhere.
